Ideally once a year dilated retinal examination, eye pressure checking is recommended. If any changes seen, doctor advise earlier checking.

If routine eye examination and timely treatment taken for retinal problems vision is preserved. However strict sugar control is must. In case of uncontrolled sugar and non-treatment of retinopathy, one can loose vision.

Yes, if there is progression of diabetic retinopathy.So regular checking is suggested. There can be leakages from new blood vessels so one may need repeat laser.
